RB Education Makes BookJam Classroom Materials More Affordable

Prince Frederick, Md. – (April 11, 2011) – RB Education, a division of Recorded Books and a leading publisher of K-12 education curriculum, announces a new, more cost-effective way for schools to purchase the Alan Sitomer BookJam. Schools can now purchase single titles from the BookJam collection, allowing educators more flexibility in selecting the books and accompanying teaching materials that best fit their students’ needs and interests.

Written by high school English teacher Alan Sitomer, a 2007 California Teacher of the Year winner and acclaimed young adult author, the BookJam combines engaging young adult novels with teaching materials for a student-centric approach to learning. By including standards-based resources, the program provides teachers with a blueprint for success in teaching core standards.

The resources included in the BookJam are proven to help teachers achieve core curriculum objectives and increase test scores while keeping the students engaged and motivated. The BookJam also encourages the use of 21st-century technology— such as creating an online video book report—and incorporates both contemporary and classic novels. The engaging book titles and exceptional classroom materials position educators for success in core standards instruction and improved test scores.

BookJams used to be available only in pre-determined collections consisting of three similarly-themed novels for $1,799. Now, schools are able to purchase single BookJam titles and the accompanying classroom materials for $599 each. With individual titles available alongside original BookJam collections, educators are free to create a customized curriculum that best suits the needs of their classrooms.

“This change in pricing is all about giving choices,” said Sitomer. “As educators, we need to be flexible and tailor programs to fit the interests and needs of our students. Teachers can have more control over their curriculum by purchasing only the titles they think would be the best fit for their classroom.”

Each title’s BookJam includes a teacher’s guide, the Composition JamBox with 21st-century multimedia projects, a resource disc with printable materials, 30 print books, one audio book and a storage cube.

Award-winning Alan Sitomer BookJam series introduces two new installments
Tyranny and Honor BookJams provide teachers with the tools and titles to engage student readers

Prince Frederick, Md. – (October 26, 2010) – Recorded Books K-12, a leading publisher of K-12 education curriculum and the world’s largest independent producer of audiobooks, today announces the release of two new installments in The Alan Sitomer BookJam series. The Tyranny and Honor BookJams join the award-winning series of reading curriculum products developed for real teachers, by real teachers to increase literacy in middle and high school students.

Written by high school English teacher, author of several acclaimed young adult novels and former California Teacher of the Year winner (2007) Alan Sitomer, The Alan Sitomer BookJam is designed to introduce students to engaging literature and core standards.

The Tyranny BookJam includes titles that have stood the test of time, such as “Animal Farm” by George Orwell, “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding and “Night” by Elie Wiesel. The titles in the Honor BookJam, “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen, “Maniac Magee” by Jerry Spinelli and “The Watsons go to Birmingham – 1963” by Christopher Paul Curtis, represent some of the most popular Newberry Honor books.

“Book selection is critical. Engaging, relevant and accessible literature isn’t mutually exclusive to rigor or high level academic work in the classroom. As a matter of fact, I believe these elements are inextricably intertwined,” said Sitomer. “For a book to be considered as a BookJam selection, it must have strong engagement, fascinating characters and be one teachers love to teach and students love to read. Whether the titles are time-honored treasures or contemporary classics, the selections command students’ attention, capture their imaginations and help them nail core language arts standards.”

With the included standards-based teaching materials, The Alan Sitomer BookJam provides teachers with a blueprint for success in teaching core standards. These resources are designed to help teachers achieve core curriculum objectives while maintaining a student-centric approach that’s proven to increase engagement and test scores.

Each Tyranny and Honor BookJam includes an implementation guide and standards-based study guide for each novel as well as a CD-ROM containing accompanying teaching resources. Also included with each BookJam is 30 copies of each title and one Composition JamBox, which is a collection of standards-based multimedia projects for the classroom offering guidance and grading rubrics for student projects such as podcasts and online video book reports.
